About
Built in the 12th century under Sultan Ali ben Youssef during the Almoravid dynasty, Marrakech's ramparts encircle the historic medina for 19 kilometers. Reinforced with over 200 square defense towers and punctuated by fifteen historic gates, these walls reach heights of up to 10 meters. Constructed using traditional rammed earth (a mix of clay, lime, and gravel), the fortifications change color from warm ocher to deep pink as the sun moves across the sky.
