About
The largest Islamic college in the Maghreb, Medersa Ben Youssef was rebuilt in 1572 by the Saadians. An extraordinary example of Arab-Andalusian architecture, it combines carved cedarwood, intricate stucco work, marble, and colorful zellige tiles. Its large white marble courtyard features a central ablution basin surrounded by shaded galleries. On the upper floor, 132 small student cells surround the inner patios, where up to 900 students once lived while studying religious and secular sciences.
